British Management University continues to consolidate its position among the most internationally engaged higher education institutions in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. In July 2026, Dr Timur Umarov represented BMU at the annual meeting of the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission in Baltimore, United States, following his appointment as an ABET Commissioner and Team Chair.
ABET accreditation is widely regarded as one of the most respected international benchmarks for programmes in computing, engineering, engineering technology, and the applied and natural sciences. For ambitious technical universities, achieving and maintaining ABET accreditation represents far more than the acquisition of an international label: it requires demonstrable evidence of rigorous curriculum design, measurable student achievement, qualified faculty, adequate institutional resources, and a functioning culture of continuous improvement.
Within this highly selective professional environment, ABET Commissioners do not participate as observers or conference delegates. They contribute directly to the structures through which programme quality is examined, accreditation findings are tested, institutional responses are evaluated, and final accreditation actions are determined. Commission membership therefore reflects both substantial professional recognition and a high level of trust in the individual’s academic judgment, integrity, and ability to apply international standards consistently.
The annual meeting brought together senior academics, accreditation leaders, programme evaluators, commission officers, and representatives of professional societies responsible for assuring the quality of technical education internationally. Commissioners reviewed accreditation cases from universities across multiple countries, examined complex findings and institutional responses, discussed consistency in accreditation decisions, considered changes to criteria and policies, and prepared for the forthcoming accreditation cycle.
Unlike participation in a conventional academic conference, service as an ABET Commissioner places an individual within the organisation’s formal accreditation and decision-making architecture. Commissioners participate in the review of accreditation actions, while Team Chairs lead institutional evaluations, coordinate expert teams, assess evidence of compliance, engage with senior university leadership, and oversee the preparation of formal accreditation statements.
This appointment gives BMU access to a level of first-hand accreditation expertise that remains exceptionally rare in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. While many universities in the region are seeking greater alignment with international quality standards, BMU is developing the internal capacity not only to understand those standards, but also to participate directly in their interpretation and application.
Dr Umarov’s appointment also carries a major operational responsibility. In the 2026-2027 cycle, he will lead an ABET Computing Accreditation Commission review of the Computer Science programme at Utah State University, coordinating the work of the programme evaluator and collaborating with Engineering Accreditation Commission leadership during a simultaneous multi-commission visit. The Team Chair is responsible for managing the evaluation process, communicating with senior university leadership, ensuring the fair and accurate application of ABET criteria, leading the review team, and overseeing the preparation of the Draft and Final Accreditation Statements.
For BMU, this is not simply an individual distinction. It is a strategic institutional asset. It strengthens the University’s capacity to benchmark its academic systems against internationally established expectations, enhances its credibility in discussions with global partners, and reinforces BMU’s position as one of the region’s most forward-looking universities in academic quality assurance. In a competitive higher education environment where many institutions aspire to international recognition, BMU is increasingly distinguished by the depth of expertise through which such recognition is pursued.
